PurpleCry : The “Where are you now & Where are you going to” question, answered. admin

Marcel and I wrote our first song together in 2012. It was our song called “Free”. I was in a space in my life where I felt very trapped (artistically) in my surroundings. Music college wasn’t at all what I expected, and entering adulthood wasn’t a very “freeing” experience for me either. I only saw the responsibility of it all. So I wrote the words to “Free” and I sat down with Marcel and said: “Today we are finishing this song.” And two hours later, a skeleton of a song was there…And the rest is history! HAHA!! If only the story went so simply.

Marcel and I then recruited the rest of our PurpleCry family and we were a full band for 8 months. Hard Hard Hard work went into rehearsals and we had so much fun. We played our first, sadly also our last, gig at Mercury in Cape Town as a 5-piece. As I then went on to realize is that the life of a student NEVER goes as planned. And for us, that was a harsh realization. Losing 3 members because their roads didn’t lead the same path we hoped as ours, was till this day one of the hardest things we had to go through. We will always have a special bond with those 3 guys who helped us etch this brand called “PurpleCry” into the musical scene.

We decided to start writing together again just as the two of us, writing melodic lyrics and blending our two versatile styles to form what you, the listener, hear today. The writing process is a lot of fun and also sometimes very stagnant! But we have learnt to work with each others strengths and to make up for what each of us lack. We always strive to make good listening music, something people can relate to or just simply sit back and enjoy. Playing numerous cover gigs as well as equal amounts of original gigs, it has become such a natural feeling to be on stage. Truly performing makes me feel more like myself every time I experience it. And we have been so blessed to be able to play along so many awesome musicians such as Taxi Violence, Southern Gypsey Queen, Naming James, Bed on Bricks AND we got to meet Biffy Clyro!

Since 2014 we have been looking to fill the spaces to form a full 5-piece set up again! We feel we have grown so much and the journey has been so worth it as we now have such an amazing base to be building this band on. We are regularly meeting new faces in the industry and trying to find the rest of our PurpleCry family and we feel like it’s just around the corner now.

We are currently planning on recording and releasing a new full band single. And we are still eagerly looking to fill the empty spots in our band so that we can bring our new music to life! Nothing worth while happens over night and we have come to accept that. We are working towards a more alternative, more hard rock sound than what you are hearing now. But we promise what we are working on is even better than you could ever expect!!

To be continued…
